The sky-crossing boat and its balloon of inflated knickers

The Criterion essay describes a boat crossing an impossibly blue sky, carried by a balloon made from inflated knickers, one of the film’s tactile practical-effects wonders. This is an original editorial reconstruction, not a film frame or production artifact; the source does not document how the effect was built.
