When Cyberpunk Became a Formula
Cyberpunk was not born as a setting kit. It was an insurgent literary movement: high technology fused with underground culture, hackers and resistance to authority. “Cyberpunk” means tech fiction with that social charge.
Mirrorshades, first published in 1986, documented the movement’s early development. Mirrored sunglasses became its outlaw emblem, linking its fiction to resistance against normalcy.
The 1988 tabletop RPG made that movement portable. An edgerunner is a marginal operator such as a hacker or rebel. Shared rules let groups rehearse cyberpunk’s conflicts in their own scenarios.
Snow Crash mocks cyberpunk by exaggerating its machinery into broader social absurdity. HeadCrash, Bruce Bethke’s 1995 novel, mocks the clichés and audience more directly. It was not by Matt Ruff.
That is self-parody: a genre mocking its own habits. Portability and commodification can coexist with political critique. So does self-parody signal failure, success, or both? Which lineage do you prefer?.
