How Mariner 4 changed Mars planning

Document 616 describes a sharp change in planners’ picture of Mars: before the flyby, many expected a relatively Earth-like world, but Mariner 4 presented a cratered, apparently dry planet with a much thinner atmosphere. That changed the rationale for piloted missions and made landing designs substantially more demanding.

Before the flyby

Planners and scientists often assumed that erosion would have erased most obvious craters and that Mars’s atmosphere was largely nitrogen. The prevailing picture also included Lowell-style canals and the possibility of advanced Martian life.^[1]

What Mariner 4 observed

Mariner 4 returned 21 blurry black-and-white images. They showed a heavily cratered, Moon-like Mars, with no obvious signs of water and no visible canals.^[2] Its radio-occultation experiment found an atmosphere less than 1 percent as dense as Earth’s. Together with earlier Earth-based measurements, this supported the conclusion that the atmosphere was mostly carbon dioxide rather than nitrogen.^[3]

The planning consequences

The images weakened the “robot caretaker” argument for a piloted flyby because Mariner 4 showed that an automated spacecraft could reach Mars and return useful observations in good condition. The atmospheric result also undermined aerodynamic landing concepts such as Wernher von Braun’s delta-winged gliders and Aeronutronic’s lifting body: a thin atmosphere meant greater reliance on rocket propulsion, requiring more propellant, lander mass, and launch capacity.^[4]

That same finding forced a redesign of the named Voyager proposal, pushing its estimated cost above $2 billion and contributing to a delay in proposing it as a new start.^[5] The flyby did not settle every question about Mars, however. Portree says the images dealt a “body blow” to hopes for advanced Martian life, while later planning still emphasized searching for life and combining robotic Voyager missions with a possible piloted encounter.^[6]
