Why a Rewetted Lichen Recovers in Stages

Portrait cinematic science-museum poster, 1024x1536. Show a small lichen being rewetted, with two distinct abstract recovery paths progressing at visibly different speeds. Warm paper-white background, softly natural lichen tones, one restrained mineral-blue accent, clean educational illustration, bright even light, generous negative space. Render the exact title “Why Rewetting a Lichen Is Not an Instant Restart” in large, bold, fully legible text in the top quarter. This title must be the only text in the image; no other labels, numbers, logos, or watermarks.

If a lichen gets wet again, does photosynthesis restart all at once?

A question about restarting

An abstract lichen image introduces the question of whether photosynthesis restarts all at once after rewetting.

The study’s Cladonia stellaris sample had been dry eleven years.

A long dry period before rewetting

An abstract visual sequence shows a study sample passing from a prolonged dry state to rewetting.

PSI and PSII are two photosystems, separate light-working parts of photosynthesis.

Two parts of photosynthesis

An abstract process diagram distinguishes two separate parts involved in photosynthesis.

PSI’s quantum yield, an estimate of photochemical use, recovered rapidly.

The PSI measurement rises quickly

One abstract recovery indicator rises quickly to represent the study’s PSI quantum-yield measurement.

PSII’s maximum photochemical efficiency, an estimate of potential efficiency, stayed low during rehydration.

The PSII measurement lags

A second abstract recovery indicator remains low while rewetting is underway.

Those readings show different measured recovery, not that the whole lichen fully recovered.

Measurements are not the whole organism

Two measurement paths sit beside an abstract lichen form, showing that readings do not represent every part of the organism.

This result describes that sample, not every lichen or condition.

A result with a specific scope

One study sample is shown on its own, emphasizing that its result is not a universal timetable.

Picture two dials moving at different speeds, not one master switch.

Two recovery speeds, not one switch

Two unlabeled indicators move at different speeds, forming a simple mental model for staggered recovery.

Commission a 60-second, visually driven explanation of why rewetting a dried lichen is not necessarily an instant, all-at-once restart. The audience should come away understanding that different parts of photosynthesis can recover at different speeds. Ground the central example in the reported Cladonia stellaris study: after 11 years desiccated, PSI recovered rapidly during rehydration while PSII’s measured recovery lagged. Explain unfamiliar photosystem terms plainly, verify what each reported measure means, and do not imply that this timing applies to all lichens or conditions. Use an intuitive visual contrast that works without readable labels or numbers. Narrate in the selected James voice: refined middle-aged male, British accent. Leave narration wording and detailed visual design to the authoring stage.
