Alien ecosystems thriving at the bottom of the Gulf

Underwater lakes and rivers exist on the sea floor

Researchers explore an underwater brine pool formed by dense, highly saline water pooling into low depressions on the sea bottom.

These mussels eat gas through bacteria instead of food

Biologists examine dense mussel colonies that survive on methane gas through symbiotic bacteria in the deep ocean.

These deep sea tubeworms evolved without digestive guts

A researcher describes chemosynthetic tubeworms that lack digestive systems and rely completely on symbiotic bacteria feeding on gases.

We used to believe all life required sunlight

Scientists explain how deep sea explorations in the 1970s overturned biological dogma by discovering organisms that flourish without any sunlight.
