The starter kit: buy two things, not five
My starting recommendation is the purple Serious Steel band plus the Gaiam foldable mat: $37.88 before shipping and tax, calculated from the prices below. If you already own a comfortable mat, buy only the band. This is a modest entry point for someone beginning resistance exercise, not a promise that one band replaces a gym.
The Serious Steel listing identifies the selected purple band and its natural-latex construction. Gaiam’s specifications give the folded footprint and full-size dimensions. Measure your drawer internally: 10 × 12 inches is only the mat’s footprint, not a verified packed size for this entire kit. Folded depth is not published.
Three optional upgrades
The Gaiam discs cost $9.98 per pair. They are an inexpensive way to add variety after the starter kit, but buy them for exercises you plan to do. Their two-sided design is useful; it is not evidence that they work equally well on every carpet or floor.
The TRX HOME2 is $239.95 on the current product listing. Ignore the older $229.95 comparison chart on that same page. The hardware offers progression through body position without storing more weights. Its advertised app trial becomes $9.99/month after 30 days; assess that separately from the hardware. The 1 lb Bala pair is $55. You are paying for the wearable format and finish, not much total load. Tom’s Guide’s hands-on review liked the secure fit but flagged the high cost per pound; its tested 2 lb version is heavier than the 1 lb pair selected here. What the evidence supports—and what it does not
Pack Hacker’s Serious Steel test followed the bands for three months. The purple and red bands showed little, if any, tension loss; the more-used orange band lost some. That is useful real-use evidence, although the review dates to 2022 and cannot establish the lifespan of today’s production. Treat bands as items that need inspection and eventual replacement, not lifetime equipment.
The mat, sliders and HOME2 recommendations rely primarily on manufacturer specifications and the practical constraints of this brief. I have not independently measured their noise, grip, folded volume or long-term durability. For an apartment, favour controlled movements and setting equipment down gently. None of these listings establishes soundproofing, and a 2mm mat should not be bought to isolate impact noise.
Keep the floor and equipment clean; inspect bands, straps and anchors before use, and follow each maker’s care instructions. Put items away dry. Drawer-friendly equipment only helps if taking it out and putting it back is easy.
What I would buy first
Under $40 before delivery: the band and mat, or just the band if you already have a mat. More variety: add the discs, bringing the three-piece total to $47.86. After the habit sticks: consider HOME2 if suspension training fits your space. Buy Bala only for a light-load routine you already enjoy. The five products are a menu, not a mandatory bundle.
