What was James V’s role in Scottish navigation?

James V undertook an enterpirising voyage with twelve ships in the year 1540[1]. The voyage went from the Frith of Forth to the Solway Frith, by the Orkneys, and was under the direction of Alexander Lindsay, the most skillful pilot of his time[1].

For many years, the little journal and chart from this voyage was consulted as the only guide for those seas[1].
