What are biomes?

Biomes are distinct geographical regions characterized by specific climate, vegetation, and animal life. They consist of biological communities that have developed in response to their physical environment and regional climate, and can span more than one continent. A biome encompasses multiple ecosystems and can include various habitats. While biomes can cover small areas, they are generally broader concepts than microbiomes, which are smaller collections of organisms in defined spaces, such as the human microbiome that includes bacteria and viruses present in or on the human body[1].
