Art Deco Made the Event

Art Deco did not merely decorate a building or object. It designed the feeling of an event, using spectacle, symmetry and luxury to make modern public life feel theatrical.

On Normandie, a grand staircase led from the Embarkation Hall toward a dining room promoted as a modern Hall of Mirrors. With no windows, lighting stayed constant and theatrical.

Luxury became tactile aboard Normandie: red upholstery, custom chairs and a fitted Aubusson carpet bound comfort to the architecture, while lacquer, glass and metals amplified the spectacle.

At the cinema, the event began outside. Monumental façades, stepped forms, sunbursts, marquees and neon turned entertainment into an urban landmark before the audience entered.

In cinemas and theatres, grand entrances and staircases extended the occasion. Dim corridors, glowing façades and thick curtains created a gradual passage into cinematic atmosphere.
