A cross-section of the ground shows how topsoil sits directly above dense subsoil and solid rock. This fragile upper band provides virtually all the food and clothing humans rely on.

The Layer Cake Under Our Feet

An experiment places bean seeds into topsoil and subsoil side by side to record their development. Over ten days, the topsoil plant builds a massive root network and rapidly outpaces the other.

Topsoil vs Subsoil Growth Test

The animation details how water continuously froze and expanded in stone crevices over millions of years. This steady weathering fractured ancient rock until the first primitive plants could take root.

Healthy soil is alive under the microscope

A microscopic view unveils the bustling world of bacteria, protozoa, and soil organisms alive in topsoil. Together with worms and burrowing insects, these creatures maintain the soil structure.
