  1. An ant relay at the edge of a hole

On a sandy bank in Brazil, Henry Walter Bates watched ants digging down toward another colony’s nest. Some dug; others carried loose soil away.

  2. A handover at the rim

As the holes deepened, ants at the top took soil pellets from the climbers. They carried the grains far enough back to keep them from rolling in again.

  3. The same ant could change jobs

Bates watched some ants switch between digging and carrying. One worker could loosen soil, then take a turn transporting it. The jobs were not fixed.
