The shell that launched a thousand sea stories

The Argonaut’s delicate coiled shell, Fig. 335, helps explain why the book turns to ancient seafaring stories. The boat-like resemblance belongs to the object; the sailing tales belong to its reception.

Fig. 336 shows the animal associated with that shell. The author moves from poetry towards observation, including the question of whether the Argonaut makes its own shelter.

The book’s swimming view, Fig. 337, accompanies accounts of observation and shell repair, including Madame Power’s experiments. Ancient sails and modern-looking diagrams should not be mistaken for the same kind of explanation.

A shell can carry a story as well as an animal. The Ocean World sets the Argonaut’s ancient sailing legends beside later observations and experiments. This is the edition’s history of an idea, rather than a modern account of propulsion. Physical PDF pages 505–510; colour remastered by Pandi.
