The Moon Metal: A Fortune in the Sky
Something escaped
The dead bird at Hall’s feet wore a fortune on its wings. That violet metal was supposed to come from one man’s mine.
Scarcity for sale
Too much gold had made gold cheap. Dr. Syx offered a replacement metal—and charged the world for its scarcity.
A mine that takes nothing
Hall had come to break that monopoly. Outside the mine, ore carts returned as full as they had entered.
Follow the evidence
He followed the dead birds uphill. Above the furnaces, a mirror faced the Moon.
An invisible cargo
A kite crossed the space above it. One corner flashed violet. The string went slack.
The real vein
The mountain was camouflage. Syx was drawing metal from the Moon. Anything crossing the stream caught some of it.
He can do it too
In his workshop, Hall aimed a smaller mirror skyward. One violet drop formed in the empty dish.
The warning
Beside his drawings lay a violet feather. Hall began a warning: keep the stream clear of living things.
The buried page
The investors would pay tonight. The warning could wait. Hall locked it in his desk and signed.
A thousand owners
He sold the design to anyone who could pay. Soon mirrors covered the hills. From his new terrace, Hall counted their lights.
The warning returns
By winter, a sparrow landed on his railing. Its wing tips glittered violet. It tried to fold them and could not.
One switch
Hall shut down his own machine. Across the valley, the other lights stayed on.
What the fortune costs
His metal had become as cheap as gold. His fortune was already safe. On the railing, the bird stopped moving.
Beyond his switch
He turned his chair away from the Moon. Behind him, a thousand mirrors kept taking what he had taught them to take.
