The Money That Doesn’t Move

Transcription

On Yap, in Micronesia, large stone discs called rai can represent wealth.

They were carved in Palau and carried hundreds of kilometres across the sea.

Their value reflects their history, craftsmanship, and the effort of that journey.

Large rai were used for important exchanges, including land and marriage gifts.

But the stone didn’t always travel to its new owner.

The community recognised the transfer, while the stone could stay exactly where it was.

Ownership moved. The money didn’t.
