The Silent Wonder

On a rattling train, the infant's calm stare pulled grown men from newspapers and held them rigid.

When the infant looked away, passengers breathed, but the traveler remembered those knowing eyes.

The Unblinking Passenger

Two months later, Victor Stott was nearly two—and still silent except when he chose to speak.

Ginger Stott had lost cricket glory with one injured finger and dreamed his son would restore it.

Victor answered that dream with a gaze that made Ginger bow his head.

A Father's Broken Dream

By the time Victor was four and a half, Henry Challis opened a library of forty thousand books.

Victor, still a very small child, saw the towering shelves and asked what they could teach him.

Victor devoured dictionaries and encyclopedias while pages flickered beneath his hand.

Three weeks later, the final volume closed.

The World of Books

For an entire afternoon, he explained existence until Henry Challis gripped the table and stopped arguing.

Victor touched the books and asked whether anyone like him existed.

Henry Challis whispered that Victor stood alone.

No One Like Him

Years later, in his eighth year, that loneliness followed Victor across Pym Common.

When dinner went untouched, Ellen Mary searched until her shoes sank into mud.

Rain swelled the pond overnight, but the search still found no sign of him.

The Missing Hour

At dawn, the narrator remembered the little pond and returned with two labourers.

They carried Victor home, while the official verdict called his death accidental.

Henry Challis finally understood ignorance as mercy, but the mystery remained.
