Spot the Biometric: Real Sensor or Hype?

Q1. A wearable uses an optical heart-rate sensor, also called PPG. What does this sensor primarily estimate?
- Pulse rate from reflected optical blood-volume changes
- Core body temperature from wrist heat
- Blood glucose directly through the skin
- Blood pressure directly from a single optical reading
Answer: Pulse rate from reflected optical blood-volume changes. PPG estimates pulse from changes in reflected optical signals caused by blood-volume changes.
Q2. A smartwatch reports wrist temperature. Which interpretation is best supported by the research?
- It is a dependable replacement for a clinical thermometer
- It is most useful for personal trends or changes from baseline
- It directly measures core body temperature in all conditions
- It provides a clinical diagnosis of fever
Answer: It is most useful for personal trends or changes from baseline. Wrist temperature is affected by factors such as ambient air, clothing, movement, hand position, and strap fit, so it is better for trend tracking than for a one-time clinical reading.
Q3. A ring displays a blood-pressure value such as 120/80 mmHg. What is the most responsible way to assess the claim?
- Assume the number is medically meaningful because it looks precise
- Check whether the specific blood-pressure function is authorized or cleared for its claimed use
- Trust the result if the ring also tracks sleep
- Treat any numerical output as automatically validated
Answer: Check whether the specific blood-pressure function is authorized or cleared for its claimed use. A clinical-looking number requires appropriate validation, and authorization of the general wearable does not automatically establish authorization of its blood-pressure feature.
Q4. Which claim should make a consumer especially cautious about relying on a smartwatch or smart ring?
- It summarizes sleep trends
- It shows a personal temperature trend
- It measures blood glucose for medical decisions
- It reports activity over time
Answer: It measures blood glucose for medical decisions. The research says not to use smartwatches or smart rings that claim to measure blood glucose, while distinguishing them from authorized continuous glucose monitors that use a sensor piercing the skin.
Q5. Why can a bioimpedance wearable require high-resolution electronics?
- The useful signal can be very small compared with the overall impedance
- Bioimpedance measures only visible skin color
- The sensor always requires a clinical thermometer
- The signal is produced only by GPS movement data
Answer: The useful signal can be very small compared with the overall impedance. One cited wrist example describes about 50 mΩ of variation against roughly 100 Ω of impedance, so detecting the change requires high-resolution acquisition.
Q6. Which statement best describes a limitation of pulse oximetry in a consumer wearable?
- It directly measures arterial oxygen without estimation
- Bright or flickering LED lighting can interfere with the optical calculation
- It is unaffected by weak pulses or arrhythmias
- It works equally well at every wrist location
Answer: Bright or flickering LED lighting can interfere with the optical calculation. A pulse oximeter estimates oxygen saturation using red and near-infrared light, so optical interference can affect the result.
