Smart Contact Lenses: Five Promises, One Eye-Safety Test

Experimental contact-lens displays showed GPS navigation; separate research produced static holographic images, while video remains a future goal.

Tear-analysis lenses target markers such as cortisol and glucose, but scarce samples and inconsistent collection methods complicate reliable disease links.

A research prototype combined flexible solar cells, blink-activated tear-electrolyte power, and a supercapacitor, producing about 150 microwatts at 3.3 volts.

FDA-approved Triggerfish tracks 24-hour eye-pressure patterns; temporary redness and punctate keratitis, a corneal irritation, highlight eye-safety concerns.
