Mount Fuji

Moonchild of the Bamboo

The Moon hangs low above a bamboo grove, and one stalk glows like a newborn star tonight.

Bamboo Cutter carefully parts the stalk and finds a tiny radiant girl named Kaguya.

Crickets chirp as Bamboo Cutter carries Kaguya home, hearts lit by the Moon and wonder.

Moon in the Grove

Morning bells replace the crickets as Kaguya grows, her beauty bright and strange.

Crowds gather, and five suitors beg, but Kaguya calmly sets impossible quests for them.

Between lanterns, Bamboo Cutter watches Kaguya smile sadly, while the Moon hides behind clouds.

Radiance and Trials

A hush like drifting clouds fades as the Emperor arrives to see Kaguya.

He admires her grace, yet Kaguya speaks of the Moon and a distant home.

Night wind carries incense and worry toward Mount Fuji, and Bamboo Cutter hears the word return.

The Emperor Calls

Before dawn, the Moon brightens, and Kaguya prepares the Imperial Letter and the Elixir with trembling hands.

She leaves both for the Emperor, while Bamboo Cutter lowers his eyes in quiet grief.

After she rises to the Moon, the Imperial Letter and Elixir burn upon Mount Fuji.
