Inside the 1985 vision for automated robot factories

A 1985 vision of the factory of the future

Director John Simpson outlines his vision where entire factories operate like computer installations with robotic limbs and machine tools acting as peripherals.

What 1985 Thought the Factory of the Future Would Look Like

Engineers demonstrate how structured light projection allowed 1980s factory robots to determine part orientation and position in real time.

How Robots Learned to See 3D Objects in 1985

Teaching a 1985 industrial robot a machinist's touch

Mechanical engineer Alex Slocum describes creating servo-controlled vise jaws so robots can grip delicate parts without crushing them.

Teaching a 1980s Robot Not to Smash Fragile Parts

An early automated guided vehicle monitors its battery status and docks itself at a charging terminal without human intervention.

Autonomous Robot Self-Charging in the 1980s

Engineers demonstrate a micromanipulator searching for a collet opening and checking that a part is seated.

How Software Eliminated a 10-Hour Machine Warm-Up

Bypassing a 10-hour machine warm-up with software

Research associate Alkan Donmez explains how real-time thermal compensation allowed a cold machine to produce high-precision parts instantly.

Warehousing data instead of spare parts in the 1980s

NBS researchers explain the shift toward digital manufacturing, predicting that factories will store CAD files rather than physical inventory.

When Industry Decided to Warehouse Data Instead of Parts

Editing CAD and running robotic CNC in the 1980s

A computer scientist modifies part dimensions on a terminal, prompting an industrial robot arm to automatically load the stock into a CNC machine.

Instant CAD to Robot Machining in the 1980s

Two robots coordinating with force feedback in the 1980s

Engineers showcase cooperative dual-robot movement with live force-feedback sensors to trace and finish machined components.
