How military parachuting evolved from wild stunts to combat

Benjamin Franklin invented airborne infantry in the 1700s.

After witnessing an early French parachute demonstration, Benjamin Franklin proposed creating a unit of 5,000 parachute balloons to drop soldiers behind enemy lines.

Benjamin Franklin Invented Airborne Soldiers

They dropped manned vehicles with zero parachutes.

Early Soviet military experiments in the 1930s tested dropping troops, cargo, and even manned combat vehicles directly onto fields without parachute support.

Dropping Military Vehicles Without Parachutes

The paratroopers who landed before D-Day.

Allied airborne soldiers crossed the English Channel under cover of darkness to drop into enemy territory hours before the Normandy landings began.

The Silent Night Jump Before D-Day

During a demonstration in Thailand, a paratrooper experiences a main chute malfunction and relies on his reserve canopy to survive.

When a Military Parachute Fails Midair

Army skydivers leap into freefall from over 10,000 feet to execute acrobatic maneuvers before deploying their canopies.

High Altitude Military Freefall from 10,000 Feet

A competitive skydiver spots ground instructions and instantly executes a sequence of turns and back loops while hurtling down in free fall.

Calling the Right Series Aerial Routine

They proved you can solve math problems mid free fall

Early aviation theories claimed terminal velocity air pressure would cause blackouts, but testing proved skydivers can solve complex arithmetic while falling.

Doing Math While Falling from the Sky

The narration explains the physics of human flight, showing how jumpers adjust their arms and posture to deflect air and maneuver through the sky.

How Skydivers Fly Like Airplanes

A large-scale aerial deployment fills the sky with combat paratroopers and heavy equipment deployed from military transport planes.

The Sky Filled with Paratroopers

Benjamin Franklin predicted airborne forces

The narrator links modern precision parachute landings directly to Benjamin Franklin's early vision of airborne military tactics.
