Cedarwood oil: uses and limits of the evidence

Cedarwood oil is used in aromatherapy, but its health benefits should be described cautiously. NCCIH lists cedarwood among essential oils used in this practice. It explains that aromatherapy may involve inhaling oils or applying diluted oils to the skin.[1]

Relaxation and sleep. A pleasant scent may be part of a relaxation routine, but that is different from demonstrating treatment of insomnia. NCCIH says there is little rigorous research on aromatherapy for insomnia and that its helpfulness remains uncertain.[1]

Hair-loss research. A 1998 randomized trial in people with alopecia areata tested a blend of thyme, rosemary, lavender and cedarwood oils in jojoba and grapeseed carriers against the carriers alone. The blend group showed more improvement. Because the intervention combined several oils, the study cannot tell us whether cedarwood alone caused that result; this is a limitation inferred from the study design, not a finding about isolated cedarwood oil.[2]

Those sources do not establish cedarwood alone as a treatment for acne, eczema or respiratory congestion. This page therefore makes no such claims. Fragrance use, a trial of a multi-oil blend and evidence for a medical treatment should be kept separate.

Benefits of Indoor Plants

Benefits of Indoor Plants

Indoor plants offer numerous advantages that enhance both physical health and psychological well-being. They can significantly improve air quality by filtering pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Research indicates that common houseplants like peace lilies and spider plants can reduce harmful substances, contributing to a healthier indoor environment. The Royal Horticultural Society suggests that incorporating more plants increases the likelihood of these benefits[3][4].

Beyond air purification, plants also have a profound impact on mental health. Engaging with plants can foster mindfulness, reduce stress and anxiety, and provide a sense of purpose. The act of caring for plants may boost mood and enhance productivity, offering holistic benefits that support emotional and physical health[1][2][4].
