When the Baron Walks Into His Own Play

In a damaged theater, actors perform beneath torn curtains as the aged Baron strides onto the stage and interrupts them. Through a breach in the wall, smoke and distant siege fire suggest the danger outside.

The Criterion essay describes a local troupe performing a play about Baron Munchausen in an auditorium already half-destroyed by the Ottoman attack, with battle booms shaking its walls. This original editorial reconstruction interprets the Baron’s interruption of the performance; it is not a film frame or period artifact.
