A room made of air

The colour-remastered water-spider plate places the silk cells among submerged plants. Colour is a modern interpretation of the book’s illustration, not a diagram of gas exchange.
An underwater air room
1/4
At first glance, a pond. Look below the surface: a spider’s silk chamber holds a pocket of air.
A spider’s underwater home begins with trips to the surface. J. G. Wood quotes Bell’s 1856 observations: bubbles carried down to a silk web gradually fill a chamber, which the spider shapes and strengthens before resting inside. One recorded sequence involved fourteen journeys. Source: Homes Without Hands, physical PDF pages 406–409; engraving on page 407, colour remastered by Pandi. The same historical plate accompanies all four reading steps. Colour remasters are modern artistic interpretations.
