A loaf left in the oven in AD 79
Someone put this bread in the oven in AD 79. The eruption of Vesuvius carbonised it. Nearly 2,000 years later, excavators found the loaf still inside an oven in Herculaneum. An ordinary meal became an extraordinary link to a vanished day.
