Antibiotic Resistance by the Numbers: Five Alarming Signals

WHO projects resistant infections and productivity losses could cost US$855 billion annually by 2035.

In the United States, antibiotic resistance costs an estimated US$55 billion yearly: US$20 billion healthcare plus US$35 billion lost productivity.

At least 30% of U.S. outpatient antibiotic prescriptions are unnecessary, about 47 million excess prescriptions each year.

A secondary estimate says animal agriculture uses about 73% of global antimicrobial consumption, mainly for growth promotion and disease prevention.
