Clara BW is my default for novels. Spend the extra $20 on Clara Colour if colour covers and highlights bring you enough pleasure to justify it. Move to Libra Colour for a larger page and buttons. Choose BOOX primarily because you need its Android app flexibility, not just because its specification list is longer.

Which one I would choose
Kobo Clara BW — $159.99. My default for a first e-reader focused on ordinary books. The 6-inch monochrome screen avoids paying for colour that a text-only reading habit rarely uses. A compact screen is less suitable for large PDFs. Product details and current offer.
Kobo Clara Colour — White — $179.99. A $20 step up from Clara BW at the checked prices. Colour is useful for covers and highlights, but the compact screen still limits comics and fixed-layout PDFs. Colour E Ink is not a tablet-like display. Product details and current offer.
Kobo Libra Colour — Black — $259.99. The Kobo option for readers who want physical page turns and more space. Stylus support is useful if annotations are part of the plan, but the stylus is an extra purchase rather than included at this price. Product details and current offer.
BOOX Go 7 — Black, US standard bundle — $269.99. An Android-based monochrome alternative for multiple reading services. More flexibility also means more setup and app behaviour to manage. This price selects the US bundle, not the cheaper Hong Kong listing. Product details and current offer.
BOOX Go Color 7 Gen II — US standard bundle — $289.99. Choose it when both colour and multiple Android reading apps matter. Do not confuse this Gen II with the earlier Go Color 7. The standard bundle does not include the optional InkSense Plus stylus. Product details and current offer.
Choose the book source before the hardware
List where your existing books come from and how they are protected. A file format appearing in a specification does not mean every purchased book in that format can be opened: store DRM and account restrictions still apply. Kobo is the simpler route when its store and supported library services meet your needs. BOOX gives you Android apps, but each app has its own login, compatibility and reading-interface behaviour.
For library borrowing, check your actual library, country and lending service before ordering. Do not assume every Libby title or account transfers directly to every Kobo. On BOOX, an app being installable is also not a guarantee that every animation, menu or page-turn gesture feels good on E Ink. That flexibility is valuable when you need it, but it comes with more decisions.
Colour, notes and the cost of extras
Colour E Ink looks muted compared with an LCD or OLED phone. Its value is distinguishing highlights, covers and illustrations, not reproducing glossy magazine pages at tablet brightness. A six- or seven-inch device is still small for fixed-layout academic PDFs or dense comics. I would not choose any of these chiefly for full-page technical documents without trying a representative file.
The BOOX prices here deliberately select the US standard bundles: $269.99 and $289.99, rather than lower Hong Kong prices. Optional stylus bundles cost more. Kobo Libra’s compatible stylus is also separate. If you only read novels, a stylus adds cost without improving page turning.
Budget for the books and a protective cover if the reader will travel in a bag. No paid reading subscription is required simply to own one of these devices, but specific store or app services may charge. Start with the reading workflow you already use before subscribing to another catalogue. This guide does not claim a measured battery-life or contrast winner.
