Traditional cordage and net making secrets of Virginia

Trees that make waterproof primitive rope

Michael Steen explains how indigenous craftspeople gathered the inner bark of cedar, tulip poplar, and locust trees to manufacture durable cordage.

A demonstration of two-strand reverse twist cordage shows how opposing rotations lock fibers together by mechanical friction.

The Opposing Twist Technique Behind Handmade Rope

Grass cordage absorbs moisture, swells up, and decays quickly, requiring builders to reserve it for interior frames and use cedar bark outside.

Why You Never Use Grass Rope Outdoors

Steen demonstrates how staggering simple overhand knots between adjacent cords establishes the uniform diamond grid needed for cast and seine nets.

How to Knot a Diamond Mesh Fishing Net

Net makers carefully measured diamond widths so undersized fish could swim through unharmed, preserving coastal waterways for future generations.
