The Wheel That Lifts Boats

Transcripció

Scotland's Falkirk Wheel carries boats between waterways in two water-filled chambers.

One rises as the other falls. But why doesn't a boat upset the balance?

A floating boat displaces its own weight in water.

As it enters an open chamber, that much water moves out into the canal.

With water levels maintained, the combined weight stays the same, keeping the two sides balanced.

Gears keep the chambers level while the arms rotate.

A half-turn uses about one point five kilowatt-hours: roughly the energy to boil eight household kettles.

Big lift. Clever balance.
