On the twelfth of October, eighteen thirty-three, at Hull, the night sky filled with light. A broad, irregular, semicircular belt of vivid white radiance spread overhead, bright enough to dim the fixed stars behind it. Witnesses described the light shifting and glowing, restless rather than still, holding the sky's attention for as long as it lasted. This was the aurora borealis, seen not from the far north but from an English port town, vivid enough that an ordinary night's watch became something worth setting down in writing. No color beyond white is recorded, no sound, only the light itself and its unusual reach. The book offers this account as one traveler's witnessed report from that single night, nothing more claimed and nothing more needed.
