The Hidden Repair Kit in Roman Concrete
Transcripció
These lime-rich pieces were once dismissed as sloppy mixing.
Research points to hot mixing: adding reactive quicklime while making the mortar.
If a small crack crosses a lime fragment, water can enter.
Calcium dissolves into the water. New calcium carbonate can form inside the gap.
In Roman-inspired lab samples, cracks stopped leaking within about two weeks.
The recipe and conditions matter. This is about small cracks in specific materials.
The surprise is not just what the Romans built. It is what happened inside.
