Secrets of assembling vintage US Navy diving gear

Every piece had to share the exact same number

Every piece of a standard deep sea diving breastplate and helmet shares a stamped serial number. Because parts were hand-fitted, swapping pieces between suits risked fatal leaks.

Why Vintage Diving Gear Was Never Interchangeable

Divers controlled their air using their chin and lips

Testing life-support valves with cigarette smoke

A sailor blows cigarette smoke into a helmet non-return valve to verify it seals completely against backflow. The narrator emphasizes that any leak requires immediate replacement of the life-saving valve.

Vintage Navy Valve Test Uses Cigarette Smoke

A sailor loops heavy leather gear onto an overhead buckle and hangs his entire body weight from it to verify tensile strength before a dive.

Why diver boot buckles always face outward

Tenders lace up the diver's massive lead-toed shoes with square knots, positioning the buckles outward so the boots never snag on each other.

Why Diver Shoe Buckles Must Face Outward

Tenders fit the diver with a specialized helmet cushion known as a horse collar to shield his shoulders before slipping the heavy metal breastplate over his head.

Why Deep Sea Divers Wore a Horse Collar

Crew tenders use a wrench to lock down the breastplate wing nuts in an exact sequence, emphasizing a critical step that must never be omitted to prevent leaks.

The Life-Saving Rule That Cannot Be Skipped

Two crew members lift and secure an 84-pound weighted belt around the diver, carefully routing shoulder and crotch straps so it cannot swing or knock the breath out of him.

Strapping On an 84-Pound Diving Belt

Tenders carefully place the heavy bronze helmet over the diver's head, rotate it into locked position, and secure the safety latch with a cotter pin while leaving the faceplate open for air.

Locking the Diver into the Deep-Sea Helmet

The diver issues the command to seal the suit, and the tender wrenches the heavy brass faceplate tight for the dive.
