The Elephant Who Came Back
Three Salutes After Twelve Years
This is an old anecdote recorded in the 1901 anthology A Hundred Anecdotes of Animals, not verified evidence from modern research into elephant cognition.[1]
The keeper is not personally named in the account. His female elephant escaped into the woods near Calcutta, and he was accused of having sold her. His explanations were rejected; his wife and family were sold into slavery, while he was condemned to labour on the roads.[2]
Twelve years later, sent to help capture wild elephants, the keeper recognised one animal in a herd and approached despite warnings. The elephant greeted him with three salutes, waving her trunk in the air, then knelt so that he could mount her back.[3]
Her recognition had practical consequences: she helped secure the other elephants and brought in her three young. The keeper’s reputation was restored, and he received an annuity for life in recompense for his suffering and courage.[4]
