Is a smart ring worth it if you already own a smartwatch?
Is a smart ring worth it if you already own a smartwatch?
Usually only if you dislike sleeping in your watch. Compare the real two-year cost before buying another health dashboard.

Keep your watch unless the ring solves a specific problem
If you already wear your watch comfortably through the night and use its sleep information, keep it for now. A second device brings another app, another battery and potentially conflicting scores. A ring earns its place when the watch stays on the charger overnight, feels uncomfortable in bed, or you want to wear an ordinary watch during the day.
My starting choice is RingConn Gen 2 Air at $199 for an inexpensive, subscription-free trial of the format. Choose Oura Ring 5 at $399 plus membership if its presentation and smaller dimensions are worth the extra cost to you. RingConn Gen 3 at $349 is the battery-and-charging-case upgrade. These are editorial recommendations based on the evidence below, not a ranking from my own lab tests.
What each purchase actually buys
Oura’s current Silver listing supplies the dimensions and 6–9-day battery estimate shown above. A standard charger and USB-C cable are included; the portable charging case is separate. The app works on iOS and Android. I would choose Silver before paying more for a finish: colour does not create additional sleep information.
The RingConn Air listing confirms its $199 price, dock and subscription-free core service. It lacks the higher models’ sleep-apnea-pattern feature. That omission is not a reason to buy a more expensive ring for diagnosis: these wellness readings do not establish whether you have a condition.
The Gen 3 listing quotes different battery ranges with vibration on and off. Its alerts cover wellness reminders, not phone messages or an alarm clock. Gen 3 uses a new sizing system. The $150 step up from Air makes sense mainly if fewer charging interruptions and a case solve an actual problem for you.
Two-year ownership cost
| Model / selected finish | Hardware USD | Core service over 24 months | Total USD | Buying status checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RingConn Gen 2 Air / Galaxy Silver | $199 | $0 | $199 | Available; sizing-kit option |
| RingConn Gen 3 / Future Silver | $349 | $0 | $349 | Available; sizing-kit option |
| Oura Ring 5 / Silver | $399 | 23 × $5.99 = $137.77 | $536.77 | Current listing accepts orders |
| Samsung Galaxy Ring / Titanium Black | $399.99 | $0 current core subscription | $399.99 | Stock signals conflict; confirm size |
| Ultrahuman Ring PRO / Bionic Gold | $479 | $0 core; optional paid extras | $479 | US shipping October 10 onwards |
This is cash paid for the first 24 months, assuming the same ring survives, current prices remain unchanged and you buy no optional extras. It excludes tax, delivery, replacement hardware, protection plans and third-party services. Oura membership includes a first free month for new members, then $5.99/month or $69.99/year. Two annual payments would cost $139.98, taking hardware plus cash paid to $538.98 and extending coverage beyond the 24-month window. Existing members without the trial would pay $542.76 with 24 monthly payments.
“No subscription” means no mandatory fee for the current core experience; it does not promise every future feature will be free. A two-year cost calculation is also not a two-year battery-life guarantee.
Samsung and Ultrahuman: worthwhile comparisons, with purchase caveats
The Samsung Galaxy Ring Titanium Black listing showed $399.99, a delivery estimate and conflicting sold-out labels when checked. I have therefore left it out of the ready-to-buy carousel. It is most relevant if you already use Samsung Health. Samsung’s specifications describe Android compatibility, with some features requiring a compatible Galaxy phone; it is not an iPhone choice. The maker quotes up to seven days, depending on size and use. Confirm your exact phone, size and stock before ordering.
The Ultrahuman US order page lists Ring PRO with charging case at $479, but says shipping October 10 onwards. It remains a wait-list comparison here, not an immediate-buy recommendation. Core tracking has no mandatory subscription; optional PowerPlugs and coverage add cost. Its up-to-15-day battery claim depends on mode. T3’s September review praised endurance but found the ring bulky and the app overwhelming, with fitness tracking still a weakness. That is a useful counterweight to the long specification list.
How much should you trust the numbers?
A 2024 sleep-lab study compared Oura Gen 3, Apple Watch Series 8 and Fitbit Sense 2 with polysomnography in 35 adults without sleep disorders for one night. All three were similar to the lab assessment for sleep duration; sleep-stage agreement was imperfect. Oura funded the study and an author disclosed an Oura advisory role. It is useful published validation with a disclosed commercial connection, not independent proof that Ring 5 beats a current smartwatch.
TechRadar tested RingConn Gen 3 for two weeks. Its sleep results were close to those of the reviewer’s Whoop, and the review praised comfort and battery life while finding the app less polished than Oura’s. Agreement between two consumer wearables is not a comparison against a sleep laboratory. I found no comparable independent, current-generation head-to-head lab test covering every model here; there is no defensible universal accuracy winner in this guide.
Use consistent multi-night trends as prompts to reflect on your routine. Do not treat a single recovery score, oxygen estimate or sleep-stage chart as a diagnosis. If a score contradicts how you feel, buying another tracker is not automatically the useful next step.
Try the fit before paying for the habit
Use the manufacturer’s correct generation-specific sizing kit and wear the sample through an ordinary day and night. Fingers change size; ordinary jewellery sizing and an older model’s fit are not dependable substitutes. Oura recommends at least 24 hours of sizing. Check comfort when gripping objects as well as sleeping, and follow the maker’s guidance about removing the ring for lifting or activities that could damage or trap it.
Keep your smartwatch for workout displays, notifications and the sports functions you already use. The strongest reason to add a ring is that you will actually wear it during previously untracked nights. If you cannot name the information gap or the routine you hope to change, try a week with your existing watch before spending $199–$537.
Method: current manufacturer pages and public variant listings for price, specifications and availability; attributed reviews for real-use observations; one clearly qualified laboratory study for accuracy context. Images are manufacturer images. This is a researched 2026 shortlist, not a verified sales-volume ranking.
