How scientists used radar to probe space from Earth

How radio waves bounce off single electrons

This visual breakdown demonstrates how oxygen atoms shed electrons in the upper atmosphere, causing incoming radio waves to scatter faint signals back toward ground stations.

The Particle Physics Behind Scatter Radar

The invention of incoherent scatter radar

Dr. Kenneth Bowles developed a method utilizing incoherent scatter of pulsed radio beams to read weak electron echoes well past the ionosphere.

The Breakthrough That Reached Past the Ionosphere

Why radar stations targeted the magnetic equator

Measuring along the horizontal magnetic field lines of the equator allowed scientists to isolate electron gyration and detect gas layers from oxygen to hydrogen.

The highest railroad in the world reaches 16,000 feet

Engineers journey up Peru's Rimac Valley aboard the world's highest standard-gauge railroad, ascending steep switchbacks to an elevation of almost 16,000 feet.

Riding the World's Highest Railroad at 16,000 Feet

Researchers explore Peru's coastal desert, where the Humboldt Current prevents precipitation for over 16 years, creating an ideal setting for sensitive atmospheric radar.

Massive mud floods that sweep away boulders

Construction teams build reinforced diversion dams in the Peruvian canyon to shield the research station from huaycos, violent flash mudflows carrying massive boulders.

Surviving the Deadly Huayco Mudflows of Peru

Peruvian workers meticulously measure, dig, and erect over 9,000 wooden posts across 22 acres of desert floor to build a colossal radar array.
