How do esports tournaments work?

Esports tournaments involve various formats, including open and closed structures. In open tournaments, any qualified team can participate, while closed tournaments are invite-only. Common match formats include Best of 1 (BO1), Best of 3 (BO3), and Best of 5 (BO5), depending on the stage of the tournament^[1][3].

Tournaments typically start with a group stage using formats like round robin, where teams earn points, or Swiss seeding to accommodate large entries^[2][6]. The playoffs use elimination brackets, either single or double, with teams progressing until a champion is crowned. The organization requires extensive planning, including rules, technology, and community engagement^[5][6].
