Loudon’s Icebergs: Five Observations from 1848

In Loudon’s account, the mass’s weight, aided by the ocean’s action at its base, plunges it into the sea.

Loudon says winds and currents carry icebergs southward after they enter the sea.

Loudon describes icebergs as clear, compact, solid ice with a bluish-green tint.

Loudon distinguishes solid icebergs from porous, incompact sea-ice, which she says consists of thin flakes with salt between them.
