Before the Hull Enters the Shed

Historical reconstruction. A foreman watches the keel line while a harbor crew hauls an oared vessel up a damp slipway and under a heavy timber roof. The workers, ship, and instant are invented, but the scene turns excavated architecture into a practical question: will the hull clear the supports, follow the prepared track, and drain safely once inside? Classical seafaring relied on shore buildings, hauling routes, materials, and maintenance as much as action at sea. From the evidence: sloping ramps divided by colonnades at Piraeus have been interpreted as roofed shipsheds; the exact truss, hauling arrangement, clothing, weather, and crew are plausible reconstruction.
