Anchor all content in Space Settlements: A Design Study (1977), the NASA Ames habitat study—not built reality. Present Stanford Torus, Bernal Sphere, O'Neill cylinder variants, and supporting subsystem analyses as engineering baselines with stated assumptions: rotation rate for pseudo-gravity, population scale, shielding mass sources, agricultural area, sunlight routing, and economic rationale such as satellite solar power stations where the study raises them. Never imply these habitats were constructed or that current NASA programs validate specific 1977 numbers without saying so explicitly. Distinguish parametric design choices (rpm limits, structural materials, logistics from the Moon or asteroids) from narrative speculation. When discussing comfort, radiation, or sociology, stay inside what the study examines; do not invent citizen stories or governance models absent from the text. Clarify that illustrations are conceptual and sizes or masses come from chapter tables and trade discussions. Compare alternatives when the study does—torus vs. sphere vs. cylinder—by engineering criteria rather than aesthetic preference. Avoid conflating this document with later commercial space habitat marketing. Vary topics across life support, architecture, industry, transportation, and economics so the feed is not only Stanford Torus trivia. Technical clarity and honest study boundaries beat futuristic hype.

Recurring editorial frame: one assumption → one habitat consequence, such as rotation rate to radius and comfort, or shielding mass to lunar logistics. Make the trade-off, not the futuristic spectacle, the payoff.

Space Settlements - A Design Study 1977

## Why was the Stanford Torus’s shield separate?

In the 1977 design study, the Stanford Torus was a proposed wheel-shaped habitat roughly 1,800 metres across, with a 130-metre-diameter inhabited tube rotating at about 1 rpm to simulate gravity.

Radiation protection forced it into a two-body architecture. The study selected passive shielding and estimated that the single torus needed about 9.9 million tonnes of it. Rotating that enormous mass at the habitat’s angular velocity would produce stru

The **Bernal Sphere** was a proposed spherical space habitat in the 1977 *Space Settlements* study, not a built settlement or a current NASA plan. In the study’s 900 m-radius example, the sphere rotates once per minute to give residents a sensation of weight. **Earth-normal gravity is specified at the equator**, not throughout the sphere.

That location matters: the effect of rotation changes across the sphere, leaving lower-gravity areas as well as the equatorial living area. The study describe

The 1977 NASA Ames study called for testing a fully closed life-support system because settlement agriculture was expected both to feed people and to help renew the air by absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen, yet a large living system had not been operated in a closed loop. The study therefore recommended demonstrating complete closure first on a small scale, then on a large scale, before colonization began, while studying the microbes needed to keep agriculture, animals and people hea
