FOREWORD
The Agricultural Statistics of Pakistan 2010-11 is the 44th volume of its series. After the devolution of Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MinFA) the function pertaining to agricultural statistics has been transferred to Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. The publication provides all sort of data relating to agricultural sector of the country upto June, 2011 which includes area, production and yield of crops. The data for the earlier period commencing from 1993-94 through 2010-11 has been provided for time series analysis. The publication contains province-wise, crop-wise and other agricultural statistical data and reasons for increase / decrease in the production of major crops.
I wish to commend the DG, Pakistan Bureau of Statistics and team of the Economic Wing for preparing this important document which will serve as a source of invaluable reference for all stakeholders including the ministries, government departments, economic policy planners, students, researchers and agronomists. The information contained in this book can be used for formulation of growth models, plans and strategies for the development of agriculture sector with the ultimate objective of accelerating the pace of economic development of the country.
For the Agricultural Statistics of Pakistan to serve the stakeholders well, it must be regularly updated. If issues like climate change are creating completely new challenges for international trade, including trade in agriculture, if food security is now a central pre-occupation in international agricultural trade, if the link between trade and investment is an essential one, then the PBS’s publication must start responding to these questions.
Suggestions to further broaden the scope of the publication and improve its quality will be highly appreciated.
(Sohail Ahmad) Secretary Islamabad February, 2012
INTRODUCTION
Agricultural is the backbone of Pakistan’s economy. About
68% of the population is engaged in farming directly or indirectly through production, processing and distribution of major agricultural commodities. Agriculture contributes about 21 percent of our Gross Domestic Product (GDP), provides livelihood to about 68 percent people living in rural areas and employs about 45 percent of the total national labour force. The agriculture sector is the major contributor in the overall export earnings of Pakistan. The share of Food Group alone in the total export of Pakistan for the year 2010-11 stood at 17.5 percent. Agriculture is equally important for industrial development. Out of about 5000 industrial establishments in Pakistan, about 60 percent are agro-based. The agriculture provides raw material for domestic industries like rugs and carpets, sugar, leather, foot ware and food products etc.
Agricultural Statistics of Pakistan was an annual publication of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MinFA), which aimed to provide the agricultural statistics for policy formulation, planning and research. After devolution of the MinFA, the Economic Wing of the defunct ministry, responsible for this publication, was transferred to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) along with its incumbents. Thus the present volume of the publication 2010-11 is being carried out by the PBS.
Methodology
The book in Part-I provides data about major and minor
crops which includes area, production and also per hectare yield. The data is for the period from 1992-93 to 2010-11 to facilitate
