IIP is the index that indicates the performance of various industrial sectors of the economy. The quarterly IIP shows the short-term fluctuations in the economy as well as identifying the turning points in economic development at the earlier stage. Furthermore, it is used in economic policy making and forecasting future economic performance in the industrial sector.
The volume of industrial production is collected every quarter (Q1: January - March), (Q2: April - June), (Q3: July - September) and (Q4: October - December). Scope, Coverage and Classification The IIP compilation follows the recommended International Standards Industrial Classification of all economic activities (ISIC) Revision 4 to enhance international comparison. The ISIC classifies all the economic activities of the economy and uses the term ‘industry’ in a broad sense to mean any economic activity. However, in the compilation of IIP the scope covers four broad sectors of the economy as classified in the International Recommendations for Industrial Statistics of 2008 and International Recommendations for Index of Industrial Production of 2010. The sectors are mining and quarrying; manufacturing; electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply and water supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation activities.
Weighting and a Reference Period The IIP uses industrial weighting approach for aggregating the elementary indices. The approach focuses on the way industrial production is organized and data is easily accessible. Weights used in IIP are value added for activities derived from the Annual Survey of Industrial Production, 2015. The reference period for IIP is the fourth quarter (October - December) 2018.

The result at first stage is a set of volume relatives for the elementary items in the index series. The elementary indices are subsequently aggregated as weighted averages to obtain the indices at higher levels. The base weighted Laspeyres index is used for calculation of index series. IIP by Broad Industrial Sectors
The overall IIP decreased from 114.3 in the fourth quarter of 2025 to 110.2 in the first quarter of 2026, representing a 3. 6 percent decline over the period recording. The decrease was mainly driven by water supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation activities which fell by 9.3 percent, followed by mining and quarrying (4.9 percent), Manufacturing (3.6 percent), and electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (0.4 percent). These declines contributed to the overall reduction in industrial production during the quarter. On a year -on-year basis, the Industrial Production Index (IIP) increased from 107.5 in the first quarter of 2025 to 110.2 in the first quarter of 2026, representing a 2.6 percent increase. The growth was mainly driven by the electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply sector, which rose by 6.3 percent, followed by the manufacturing sector, which grew by 4.8 percent resulting in an overall improvement in industrial production during the period.

The decline was mainly attributed to manufacture of electrical equipment , which fell by 24.1 percent , followed by the manufacture of tobacco products (21.9 percent), manufacture of beverages (9.4 percent), and manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (8.4 percent). Despite the overall decline, some manufacturing activities recorded a notable growth during the quarter. Printing and reproduction of recorded media increased by 19.8 percent, followed by the manufacture of fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment (19.3 percent), manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c. (13.3 percent), and manufacture of rubber and plastics products (12.2 percent).
On the other hand, comparing the Industrial Production Index (IIP) on a year -on-year basis, the results indicate an increase of 4.8 percent, rising from an index of 107.2 in the first quarter of 2025 to 112.3 in the first quarter of 2026. The increase was mainly attributed to the manufacture of tobacco products, which increased by 77.0 percent, followed by the manufacture of wood and products of wood and cork except furniture and the manufacture of articles of straw and plaiting materials, which increased by 26.2 percent. Other notable increases were observed in the manufacture of fabricated metal products (except machinery and equipment), which rose by 25.7 percent, and the manufacture of basic metals, which increased by 16.9 percent. However, during the same period, the index recorded declines in several activities. The manufacture of electrical equipment decreased by 20.6 percent, while the manufacture of leather and related products declined by 12.0 percent. The manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations decreased by 9.8 percent, and the manufacture of paper and paper products fell by 8.1 percent.
