Importing .CSV files into SPSS software
The Official Statistics Portal promotes open formats therefore all research datasets are available in CSV files. This is a short tutorial on how to import CSV files into SPSS.

Open SPSS and select ‘File → Open → Data…

Click on ‘Files of type’ and select Text (*.txt, *.dat, *.csv)’.

Select CSV file.

In the Step 1, select ‘No’ for ‘Does your text file match a predefined format?’

In the Step 2, select ‘Delimited’ for ‘How are your variables arranged?’ and ‘Yes’ for ‘Are variable names included at the top of your file?’.

In the Step 3: select ‘2’ for ‘The first case of data begins on which line number?’, ‘Each line represents a case’ for ‘How are your cases represented?’, and ‘All of the cases’ for ‘How many cases do you want to import?’.

In the Step 4, select ‘Semicolon’ (or another option that corresponds the data structure) for ‘Which delimiters appear between variables?’ and ‘Double quote’ for ‘What is the text qualifier?’.

In the Step 5, see the file and find variables needing 0 at the beginning, e.g., for the Classification of Administrative Territories and Territorial Units select the ‘Data format’ to be ‘String’.

- In the Step 6, select all that applies to your specific needs and click on ‘Finish’.
