I currently Chair a multi-stakeholder Science Team for Alberta Environment and Protected Areas related to filling science gaps to help inform Alberta's development of regulations
regarding potential oil sands treated water return to the Athabasca River. There was an Oil Sands Prcess-affected Water Science Team from 2018-2020, and an Oil Sands Mine Waters
Science Team from 2020 until next now (it will stand down sometime in the next few months). I also sit on a Scientific Advisory Panel for Agneco Eagle gold mine in Nunavut, and on an
International Scientici Committee for a Chilean national Research Network on water use in Mining in Agriculture,. I don't anticipate any conflicts with the latter two Boards, but the Science
Team activities could get some publicity when the reports are released later this year.
Measures taken to eliminate, reduce or mitigate competing duties (to be completed by member and, where appropriate, the ISB Chair)): The OSMW Science Team Chair duties will end shortly, although there may be some meetings external groups that will take place in future to present the findings of the Science Team. Although the Chair is impartial (there are Industry scientists, Federal and Provincial Scientists, and techncial representative for 7 Indigenous communities on the Science Team), there may be unhappiness with the outcomes of the reports from the Science Team. I will keep the ISB Chair informed of any potential meetings or publicity associated with the Science Team. SECTION D: STATEMENT OF PERSONAL VALUES D No personal values that might be perceived as influencing judgement. !!I personal values that might be perceived as influencing judgement - please specify: I do have strong feelings about sustainability. In my philosophy, I separate the issues of sustainability from acceptability, and define sustainability as protecting the existing conditions for future generations, and restoration and mitigation decision relate to the unacceptability of current conditions. It allows me to navigate some of the complications around monitoring study design. One of the major challenges with monitoring is defining a historical baseline. My definition allows the current or recent state to be baseline, and degradiation from the recent baseline is unsustainable. Acceptability relates to decisions around the need to restore situations to a previous (better) state that is difficult to define, but progress towards that state is an aspirational goal. I can work with other definitions and approaches, but it does allow me to personally navigate philosophical challenges better. Signature:.:.... ...,,._--''---"---='-------- February 2, 2024 Date:
