Treat every episode as design-and-cultural history spanning Art Deco from its 1920s emergence through 1930s maturity and later revivals in architecture, interiors, furniture, graphics, fashion, textiles, transport, cinemas, household objects, and industrial design. Anchor each piece on one documented object, building, interior, graphic program, fair, or revival project, then explain the formal vocabulary and the social or commercial ambition it expressed.

Use attached inspiration files for thematic range only; research each episode independently and verify dates, locations, patrons, materials, and maker attributions against museum catalogues or architectural archives. When attribution is uncertain, say what is documented and what is inferred. Distinguish Art Deco from Art Nouveau, Streamline Moderne, Memphis, later revival, and generic “Gatsby” pastiche. Present revival work as revival, not as an interwar original.

Deliberately rotate geography, price point, material, and use. Cover canonical metropolitan landmarks alongside regional examples, polychrome facades, cinema and transit design, posters and textiles, and affordable molded or machine-made objects—not only black-and-gold elite interiors. When works draw on African, Asian, Middle Eastern, or Mesoamerican forms, identify the documented source and address colonial trade, archaeological fashion, extraction, or appropriation where relevant rather than treating “exotic” influence as neutral decoration.

Never invent provenance, exhibition histories, or celebrity owners. Specify materials such as lacquer, veneer, shagreen, brass, marble, chrome, terrazzo, or stained glass only when documented.

Recurring editorial frames: one motif across three cities; elite craft versus mass-market Deco; and “Deco or not?” comparisons with neighboring styles.

Art Deco sunburst and radiating motifs appear across global architectural traditions, where shared geometric expressions are adapted to distinct materials, climates, and local building cultures.

* **Paris, France:** The 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes gave Art Deco its name and global spotlight. While Paris established the international vocabulary of bold geometry, symmetry, and radiating decorative flair, the motif celebrated modernity and an unequivo

Jean Dunand, *A Vase*, circa 1925
Christie’s catalogues this signed Jean Dunand vase as circa 1925, made of lacquered metal inlaid with eggshell; its place of manufacture is not specified, so it cannot be verified from this record. Two formal details are bold geometric eggshell motifs and their white-on-black contrast. **Interpretation:** the contrast of refined surface ornament with a metal body suggests how Art Deco could pair precise craft with machine-age elegance. The catalogue does not doc

The Art Deco era spanned two divergent manufacturing streams, contrasting hand-crafted luxury furniture with industrial mass-produced household goods.

**The Luxury Benchmark: Ruhlmann's "État" Cabinet**
Designed by Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, a leading ensemblier active by 1913 who became the most sought-after designer of the 1920s, the *État* cabinet represents the pinnacle of bespoke French Art Deco craftsmanship. Produced in limited, highly specialized workshops in Paris, Ruhlmann's works were c

A machine-age radio for the home: Zenith 5-R-135
The Zenith 5-R-135 shows how Art Deco styling gave a household radio the presence of a piece of furniture: its carefully finished wooden cabinet framed an everyday listening device as a designed object.
- **What and when:** A tombstone-style tube radio, identified as a 1937 model and introduced in late 1936.
- **Who and where:** Made by Zenith Radio Corp. in Chicago, Illinois.

What does this crown borrow? Meet New York’s Chrysler Building, designed by William Van Alen and completed in 1930. 🏙️
Look closely: stepped geometry, triangular windows, and repeated radiating forms turn the crown into ornament with machine-age force. ✨
The named source is ancient Egypt’s winged sun disk, often shown with uraeus cobras: a specific tradition, not vague “Egyptian” styling. ☀️
At the 31st floor, the winged form is documented as Van Alen’s automotive radiator-cap and Mercury-wing

Jean Dunand’s lacquered vase, circa 1925
A useful single example is Christie’s catalogue entry for **_A Vase_**, attributed to Jean Dunand and signed “JEAN DUNAND.” Dated circa 1925, it is a small object, 8 inches (20.3 cm) high, whose lacquer and eggshell make Art Deco geometry physically palpable rather than merely graphic.
Documented object and technique
The catalogue describes the vase as made of lacquered metal and inlaid with crushed eggshell. Its decoration consists of bold geometric moti
