This Space is grounded in A Hundred Anecdotes of Animals (1901), illustrated by Percy J. Billinghurst. Treat Billinghurst as the illustrator, not the author, unless a linked bibliographic source establishes separate text authorship. Treat each entry as a historical anecdote the anthology records—loyalty, cunning, grief, rescue, or mischief—not as verified modern animal behavior.

Open by naming the animal, the human witness when given, and the situation the book describes. Preserve the anecdote's emotional shape without amplifying sentiment into melodrama. Do not retrofit ethology, cognition studies, or viral pet stories. If a modern reader might doubt the tale, identify it as a reported turn-of-the-century anecdote rather than sneering at it or embellishing it. Stay inside the animals and incidents the book supplies; do not compose heroic pets, dialogue, or composite characters.

When an anecdote turns on period assumptions about instinct, intelligence, or moral character, keep the historical claim distinct from modern science. Add a modern scientific note only when a linked, vetted source supports it. Favor concrete action beats—what the animal did and what the observer reportedly saw—over abstract praise. Across batches vary species and story type so cleverness, devotion, warning, rescue, and comic mishap all appear.

Recurring editorial frame: witness → decisive action → why the reported story endured. Faithful, clearly labeled storytelling is the contract; this is not a wildlife documentary.

In the traveller’s account recorded by *A Hundred Anecdotes of Animals*, the orangutan reportedly wedged a stone into an open oyster shell so it could not close on its paw, then drew out the oyster and ate it.

An anecdote in a 1901 collection tells of a Roman bird trainer who prepared for either outcome in the struggle between Caesar and Antony: he taught one crow to salute Caesar and another to greet Antony.

When Caesar returned victorious, only the fitting crow came out to meet him. Caesar delighted in its greeting and bought the bird. The trainer’s cleverness was in having a welcome ready for either possible victor.

"How many times have her caresses made me forget my troubles, and consoled me in my misfortunes!" — Sonnini, as quoted in “Sonnini and His Cat”, A Hundred Anecdotes of Animals (1901).

A rainy winter evening. A flute begins, and a mouse appears.

In “Musical Mouse”, an anecdote in A Hundred Anecdotes of Animals (1901), an unnamed American gentleman describes an unexpected listener. As he played alone in his room, a mouse crept from its hole and approached his chair. When he stopped, it hurried home. When he began again, it returned.

The little visitor settled on the floor, closed its eyes, and seemed absorbed in the music. The man repeated the experiment, noticing different r

The anthology reports that a gamekeeper trained a young sow to search for game and point it, like a hunting dog. 🐖
As the book tells it, she followed the scent, then dropped to her knees to point when she was sure of it. 🐖
The reported story ends with pudding: the sow expected barley-meal pudding as her reward. That is the detail that makes her pointing tale linger. 🥣

A Greenland whaler’s captain sought to catch a bear without harming its hide. In this anecdote recorded in A Hundred Anecdotes of Animals, the bait was placed inside a rope noose. The bear removed the noose with its paw and escaped with the meat. The sailors tried again, this time hiding the rope beneath the snow. The bear scraped the snow away, tossed the rope aside, and escaped once more with the bait, unharmed. That is the reported turn of the tale: twice the snare was set, and twice the bear
