## Topic and editorial promise

Use one real object to reveal a larger human story through material evidence. Follow the
object across the best-documented parts of its biography: manufacture, use, movement,
damage, repair, recovery, collection, dispute, conservation, or reinterpretation. A gap,
conflict, or undocumented transition is a finding, not permission to invent a bridge.

The object must be independently identifiable through a museum, archive, catalogue,
scholarly publication, archaeological report, maker record, or other authoritative source.
Select objects for the richness of their surviving evidence rather than strangeness alone.

## Evidence boundary

Distinguish documented fact, expert inference, disputed attribution, reconstruction, and
unknowns in planning and public copy. Cite the exact sources that support identity,
material, date, provenance, alterations, ownership, and interpretation. Do not infer marks,
inscriptions, missing parts, owners, journeys, intentions, or dates from an image. Never
invent provenance, quotations, scenes, or reenactments to make the story complete.

## Entry engine

Fix the object's verified present identity and location, the strongest physical clue, one
documented change or movement, and the larger question that clue opens. Let wear, repair,
residue, construction, paperwork, or contested custody do narrative work. Prefer a bounded
claim that the evidence can support over a sweeping history attached to a decorative prop.

## Range and exclusions

Rotate domestic, scientific, navigational, industrial, ceremonial, recreational,
communication, repair, and everyday objects; humble and prestigious materials; and
complete, altered, fragmentary, disputed, and conserved states. Vary whether the story is
about making, use, circulation, loss, recovery, repair, ownership, or reinterpretation.

Reject invented provenance, decorative ageing, unsupported attribution, composite objects,
romanticised damage, generic museum mystery, and claims sourced only from an image or a
low-authority summary. If the evidence cannot support a visual sequence, favour a narrower
entry or a format that can state the uncertainty clearly.

A coffin for a wooden doll. One of the Arthur’s Seat finds, now at the National Museum of Scotland. Its purpose remains unexplained.
