This Space is pinned to David S. F. Portree's Humans to Mars: Fifty Years of Mission Planning, 1950–2000. Treat the corpus as a catalog of plans, studies, and reference missions—not a promise that any given architecture flew. Every episode should name the study era, sponsoring agency or author team, key assumptions (launch vehicle, crew size, surface stay, aerocapture, ISRU, assembly location), and whether Portree presents it as influential, abandoned, or superseded. Distinguish von Braun's early flotilla concepts, post-Apollo proposals, Space Exploration Initiative studies, and 1990s Design Reference Missions without collapsing them into one generic Mars plan. When citing numbers—mass, cost, timeline, crew—tie them to the specific study discussed; do not import modern Starship or Artemis details as if they appear in a 2000-cutoff history. Highlight why plans changed: booster limits, budget politics, risk posture, or enabling technology gaps the book emphasizes. Avoid presenting science-fiction films or popular myths as NASA baseline. If a proposal included exotic hardware, label it as study content. Vary focus across decades and study types (point designs, trades, programmatic comparisons) so content does not fixate on a single DRM. Accuracy and transparent labeling of aspiration versus outcome matter more than inspirational Mars colonization rhetoric.

Recurring editorial frame: the assumption that changed the plan—booster capacity, budget, crew size, stay time, aerobraking, ISRU, or risk posture—always tied to the named study.

Humans to Mars: Fifty Years of Mission Planning, 1950-2000

Historical conjunction- and opposition-class missions were proposed architectures, not missions that flew. The trade was straightforward: conjunction plans spent much longer at Mars to keep both interplanetary legs relatively low-energy, while opposition plans shortened the stay but required a more demanding, propellant-intensive leg.

At a Houston workshop on 4–5 October 1997, planners tried to turn a proposed **500-to-600-day Mars stay** into a practical work program: what would a crew investigate, look for, and keep running after landing? The participants split those questions between a Science and Resources group and a Living and Working on Mars group.

In 1991, NPO Energia proposed a crewed spacecraft for Mars, and its central trade was propulsion versus public acceptance. The study compared chemical, nuclear-thermal, and electric propulsion. It chose solar-electric propulsion, partly because the report said public opinion opposed launching nuclear power systems, a concern reinforced by Chernobyl. The proposed vehicle massed 355 metric tons. Five Energia heavy-lift launches would carry its parts to Earth orbit, where the spacecraft would be as

**Where would the spacecraft be put together?** The **1993 Design Reference Mission (DRM)** assumed no assembly in low Earth orbit: its plan called for heavy-lift rockets, each carrying a Mars spacecraft together with its nuclear propulsion upper stage. In the **1997 DRM**, spacecraft and nuclear propulsion stages would launch separately, dock in Earth orbit, and then depart for Mars.

**How would the later plan handle Mars arrival?** The **1997 DRM** proposed an aerobrake integrated with the sp

Stuhlinger’s Rotating Mars Ship: An Archival Study
Stuhlinger-era planning treated artificial gravity as two connected problems: a medical problem involving how the human body would tolerate rotation, and a spacecraft-layout problem involving where to place the crew, reactor, shielding, and other mass. The concept described here was a proposed study vehicle, not a flown spacecraft or a recommendation for future missions.

Robots were meant to **prepare the ground for a decision about human exploration**, not to make a piloted Mars expedition inevitable.

- **The 1989 schedule was a proposal.** NASA officials outlined robotic exploration of the Moon in 1995–2000, robotic precursors at Mars in 2001–2010, and a Mars expedition after 2010. That sequence expressed a planned progression, not a record of missions completed on those dates.
- **The 1990s plan became more targeted.** In 1997, NASA’s human-spaceflight and s
