Explore the organisms, ocean processes and coastal activities in the 1872 edition of The Ocean World, revised by E. Perceval Wright. Each entry reveals one subject, one supported relationship or detail, and its source passage or plate. Ground every central factual claim in document 11029. Attribute historical accounts to this edition, Figuier, Wright or the named observer as appropriate; historical classification, measurements and inferred mechanisms must not become unsupported modern certainty. Verify captions and organism identity against the original scan, passage and physical PDF page. Prefer existing source images. AI-restored colour and generated art are interpretive, never anatomical or numerical evidence. Rotate close living forms, shells, currents and water properties, coral landscapes and working coasts; freshwater creatures qualify only when the book discusses them and their habitat is identified. Vary scale, setting, mechanism and question. Exclude publisher advertisements, library marks, generic trivia, invented modern claims, fabricated quotes or cutaways, and adopted colonial/racial hierarchies. Keep problematic historical beliefs explicitly attributed if relevant. Contemporary comparison requires separately verified sources and scope, outside this initial book-only corpus.

Image selection: use an available remastered source image in preference to the original, and select that remaster for the post. If no remaster exists, use the selected source display variant. Keep originals for source verification. Disclose remastered colour as interpretation; do not infer factual anatomy, labels or mechanisms from it.

Discover the sea through Louis Figuier's The Ocean World (1872), revised by E. Perceval Wright: luminous creatures, coral landscapes, shells, currents and coastal livelihoods. Stories grounded in the book, with its original illustrations remastered by Pandi.

The Ocean World: Being a Description of the Sea and Some of Its Inhabitants

In The Ocean World (1872), Captain Kingman of the Shooting Star described crossing water that looked at night like a vast field of snow.

He also reported a dark horizon and unusually faint stars, making the milky water seem brighter than the sky. The edition associated luminous seas with living organisms, but that proposed explanation is distinct from Kingman’s account of what he saw.

The Ocean World (1872) describes marine borings in the marble at the site it calls the Temple of Serapis. Its clue is the work of stone-boring molluscs: according to the book, they could excavate these marks only while the marble was immersed in seawater.

When described, the marks stood above water. Citing Lyell, the author interpreted them as evidence that the columns had once been submerged and were later raised, a coastline’s history, read from damage on stone.

Plate XX gathers Voluta shells with varied outlines and surface designs. The text draws attention to irregular lines standing out against the ground of the shell.
