The Day the Barber’s Magpie Went Quiet
Transcripció
A barber in Rome had a magpie that could imitate almost every word it heard. Then some trumpets sounded outside the shop, and the bird fell silent. A day passed. Then another. People who knew its chatter began to worry. Had that sudden noise damaged its hearing? Had it lost its voice? This little mystery comes from A Hundred Anecdotes of Animals, published in nineteen hundred and one. The silence ended with a flourish. According to the story, the magpie suddenly performed the trumpet call, complete with its pauses and changes. The familiar chatterbox had acquired a quite different performance. The narrator gives the triumph a curious cost. The bird, we are told, had forgotten everything it knew before. We cannot know from this brief account what the magpie was doing during those quiet days. But we can share the barber’s surprise: the bird everyone feared had fallen mute had returned to the conversation sounding like a trumpet.

Valiant Finds His Way Home
Valiant Finds His Way Home

When the gates of Gibraltar opened one morning, the guard found an unexpected arrival: Valiant, a donkey they had good reason never to expect again. The 1901 collection A Hundred Anecdotes of Animals tells his story under the title ‘The Lost Ass’.[1]
Valiant belonged to a Royal Navy captain and had been put aboard a frigate sailing from Gibraltar towards Malta. When the vessel struck sands off Point de Gat, he was thrown overboard in the hope that he might reach land. The sea was so rough, the account says, that a boat leaving the ship was lost.
Yet a few days later he presented himself at Gibraltar. Once admitted, he went straight to a merchant’s stable he had occupied before.
The narrator reckons his journey at more than two hundred miles through unfamiliar country. That extraordinary distance is the book’s claim; it supplies no route record. The ending needs no further ornament. After the wreck and the dangerous water, Valiant arrives at a gate, is let through, and heads for the stable he knows.

The Pointer Who Wanted Pudding
The Pointer Who Wanted Pudding
A young sow in the New Forest took a liking to a gamekeeper’s pointer puppies. She played with them, fed beside them, and sometimes followed them away from home. In the 1901 collection A Hundred Anecdotes of Animals, their keeper begins to wonder whether this unlikely companion might learn their work.[1]
He tempted her farther with barley-meal pudding. His other method was cruel: he carried stones to throw when she misbehaved. That detail belongs to the account, along with its admiration for the result.
The sow reportedly learned to search the ground with the dogs. When a scent was faint, she slowed her trot and lowered her ears and tail. Once certain, she dropped onto her knees and held her position. The book says she could remain there for five minutes or more.
When the game rose, she returned to the keeper. If the pudding did not follow promptly, she grunted loudly for it. The narrator marvels at the pig’s resemblance to a pointer. Her demand for the promised reward gives the story its own, unmistakably porcine, finish.

Two Toads, One Slow Escape
Two Toads, One Slow Escape

A gardener clearing rubbish disturbed two toads. As he watched, one climbed onto the other’s back, and the pair began to move slowly towards shelter. Only when he looked more closely did he discover what had happened: his spade had injured the passenger.[1]
That is almost the whole of ‘Faithful Companion’, one of the shortest stories in A Hundred Anecdotes of Animals, published in 1901. The injured toad, the narrator explains, could no longer get away without help. Its companion carried it.
There is no named gardener, no further account of the injury, and no report of what followed once the two reached their retreat. The story rests on that single witnessed movement: one animal getting onto another, and both departing together.
Its title supplies the affectionate interpretation. The illustration, by Percy J. Billinghurst and remastered here, gives the modest scene room to be noticed. Beside the collection’s dramatic rescues, this reported act of assistance is quieter: a burden taken up, and a slow journey out of danger.
